Week 4 Assignment

Exterior Architecture

Inspired by the intricate designs of the Mountain and Moon jewellery collection, I created a texture for the facade of the architecture which seem ordinary at first glance, however as individuals approach the facade, the complex details of the building can be observed. In addition, the building is enclosed with glass to be more intergrated with the nature to show connections between the name of the client Mountain and Moon and its workshop. Sitting at the top is the Mountain and Moon workshop which utilizes geometric forms for its exterior and resting below the hilly terrain is Trent Jansen workshop with part of its facade protruding out of the terrain. Similarly it is enclosed by glass that is deliberately designed to extend out at an angle to keep the interest of its audience. Through these, it displays the word intrigue which was one of the keywords in the design development phase.

Assessment Criteria (Three Words)

The word form and intrigue was chosen as part of my design. "Form" was shown in my work through the use of geometric shapes and overlapping planes. "Intrigue" was portrayed through the use of glass planes in the workshop which allowed individuals to look through. In addition, walls are deliberately cut out in unique shapes with the purpose of displaying completed products is to attract the attention of individuals.

Assessment Criteria (Architecture)

With the showroom standing at 16 metres by 14 metres, it provides sufficient space for both clients to showcase completed products. The showroom also stands at 3 metres tall to ensure larger furnitures to be displayed. The facade of the building is also mostly built out of concrete and glass to provide fine details and at the same time incoporating nature as part of the design.

Mountain and Moon workshop to showroom stairs

Assesment Criteria (Top Stairs)

Corresponding to the jewellery design of Mountain and Moon which focuses on complex and intricate details, the texture for the stairs was derived from the word organic which can also be defined as a root system of a living matter. As such, a bark-like texture from trees is used as part of the stairs connecting to showroom as it resembles the products created by Mountain and Moon for example its detailed leaf-shaped earrings. In addition, the balustrade on first floor consist of a pattern inspired by the chains of the necklace by Mountain and Moon which also serves as a display unit in the showroom. Wires are incorported as part of the designs to show lines and the use different forms which is a words that influenced my design for  the stairs and architecture of the building.

Trent Jansen workshop to studio stairs

Assesement Criteria (Bottom Stairs)

To accomodate bigger furnitures being transported from the workshop to the showroom, the stair riser is at 100mm to allow smaller and simpler steps. In order to create more relationship with the word intriguing, the different steps of the stairs cantilevers from the wall and extends only halfway for each different step that differs from traditional fleet of stairs. To strengthen each fleet of stairs a cylindrical rod is position beneath and above each step to hold each other in place. To further relate the stairs to the style of treant jansen's design which uses local natural materials such as kangeroo skin and other natural resources in Australia.  I created a texture from the word fibrous which is usally associated with natural resources such as plants and tree. Furthermore, the spiral texture created is similar to the drawings used by Aboriginal community which is also being promoted through Treant Jansen's design.
